Introduction to Advertising and History of Advertising

It is important to understand advertising in an evolutionary perspective so as to appreciate the reasons for advertising’s use in a modern industrialized society. Advertising was spawned by a market-driven system and developed in a capitalistic, free enterprise market economy in which mass production utilized advertising as an essential tool. Urbanization, transportation expansion and communication advancements all facilitated the use and growth of advertising, the result of which is that advertising is firmly entrenched as a business function in our society with deeply rooted economic and cultural foundations.

The Different Categories of Advertising

Because of its ability to deliver messages cheaply and effectively, advertising is very widely used in many different ways. Here are some of them.

Rural Advertising and its new trend

Over 70% of India’s population resides in rural areas. About one-third of the national income is derived from agriculture and allied activities that employ about two-third of the population. In sheer numbers, the volume of purchase is phenomenal. However, information and research into the rural market is not commensurate with its size and its potential for growth. The general understanding among marketers and advertisers is that the rural population is largely uneducated, practices agriculture for a living, and is far-removed from the progress of urban India. The rural economy continues to be entirely dependent on the vagaries of nature. Consequently, consumption and spending patterns are closely linked to the quality of the monsoons. However, due to efforts by various organizations and institutions, the drive towards women’s empowerment and the success stories of micro-credit initiatives by women’s self-help groups in many states, there is a greater awareness consumption of new concepts and products in Rural India.

Development of an appropriate Ad Strategy

How do we go about selecting the appropriate role in a particular situation? Basically, by asking questions such as:
  • Whom do we need to communicate with
  • What do we need to tell them?
  • Why do we need to tell them (what effect are we trying to produce)?
  • Where is the best medium to deliver the message?
  • When is the best time to deliver the message?
  • How can we best get out message to them? (i.e. through which advertising media?)

Picturing the Market

In Advertising, more people need to know. The more people know, the better they can carry out their task of producing good advertising. At the end of the day we have to achieve good communication and that depends on a clear understanding of the people we are communicating with. It is a well established principle of teaching or public speaking that the material, method of delivery and choice of words must be carefully selected to match the needs, expectations and ability of the audience..

Business Functions of Advertising

How advertising agencies get paid:

It is important to understand that what advertising agencies have to sell is time. Their main cost is for the salaries and office accommodation of their staff. Most other outgoings – media costs, artworks, films etc are charged out to clients anyway.

Digital Advertising

In this coming age of digital media, India has seen rise in the social media agencies and new trends in the adoption of the Internet for marketing. Businesses are increasingly spending money in online advertisements, and online marketing services.

How is TISS-SVE B.Voc model different from current education system?

  • The main difference is that this education system does not emphasize on the theory alone but is primarily based on the shop floor practices of the industry/company.
  • Vocational education which focuses on a specific skill rather than general skill knowledge.
  • Students will be given on-the-job training for four to five days and one or two day classroom theory in a week. Therefore, students begin their career trajectory while pursuing their study in vocational streams.
  • At the end of the course students will be awarded a UGC recognized TISS issued B Voc Degree. Unlike many mainstream courses, SVE-TISS courses mandate skill certificate from the industry where the students has undergone on-the-job training.
  • TISS-SVE vocational courses will seek to have as minimal eligibility criterion as possible. This is to enable education to reach out to as many students as possible. Thereby, it endeavors to design and make programmes as inclusive as possible and on a continuous basis.
  • The main advantage of the TISS-SVE programme is the provision of multiple entry and exit system . Although, it is a full time degree programme, the students can exit after completing a level and begin working as a skilled professional in the chosen skill. Later, they can rejoin for progression to the next level. TISS-SVE will award level certificate on successful completion of each level.
  • Students will get hands-on experience from the industry, through the Skill Knowledge Partner, during the training period, thereby, giving them a much needed edge when they compete for jobs.
